Animatic Revised

This is going to be the final version of how Pumpernickel will play out.

It's taken me far longer to finish this than it should, and I was pretty frustrated with the ordeal, mainly because I don't really know perspective all that well. Luckily, Dave was able to help me!

Overall, I'm really happy with this version and I'm eager to start animating.

Background #1

My first background is all done! We'll be staring at this still image for five seconds of the film!

My other layouts from now on are going to be really rough so I can move onto animating. I just did the final version of this bg because it won't have any animation, and because I wanted to post something that would resemble the final look of Pumpernickel. Obviously Ugly Americans and Mike Mignola were big influences.

Onward!

Onion Head

I haven't really been updating as much as I'd like to...
I've been over thinking a lot of things when really I just want to move onto layout.

Still, hopefully I'll have an updated animatic by the end of the day.

But anyway, I decided to alter Onion Head's design a little bit, and make him more intimidating.

Animatic (rough sound)

My first animatic, and already I'm thinking of making quite a few changes:

-Make Onion more sinister
-Pumpernickel runs towards the staircase (cut him throwing the axe into the wall)
-Give Onion more things to due, like close the blinds, sharpen his axe, have him pull
out a to-do list, etc.
-Maybe have Onion enter through the first floor ???
-For the end credits sequence, have Pumpernickel bury the body in the backyard, and
it pan out to reveal multiple mounds of dirt.

What's most important though, is that people thought it was funny - so mission accomplished! Also as a side note, I most likely won't be using 70% of the sound I used for this animatic, since I'll be making my own via field recorder.

Home Layout

The entirety of Pumpernickel takes place in two areas; the kitchen, and the 2nd floor hallway.

I've now come to the realization that it is waaaaay easier to have a film that takes place outside than a confined space - everything has to make sense!

This was actually kinda tricky figuring out how the house works, but I think it turned out okay. Excuse my chicken scratch.

Schedule for FALL 2011

Is it just me or is schedule a weird word?
Anyway, this is probably going to wind up being very loose, but the goal is to get most, if not all my film roughed out before next semester. Good luck, me!

Pumps Turnaround

Plot (rough)

-Suburban home. Night.
-Parents are asleep in bed.
-Shot of kitchen.
-The sound of Pumpernickel running down the stairs.
-Hits the archway of the door.
-Runs over to his dish bowl, happily.
-Stops smiling, seeing that there's only a few pieces of puppy chow left.
-Instantly forgets and goes back to being insanely happy.
-Slams face into the dog bowl.
-Freeze frame – title appears on pumpernickel's bowl. 5 sec.
Drags the bowl around the floor.
Hears a crash, ears perk up
-Cut to onion loosing the bolts from the window, and throws his axe on the ground,
grabs it, and picks it up.
-Looks pretty sinister, hears panting and panics
-Cut to Pumpernickel lying on the ground on his back with legs stretched out (“rub my tummy” pose).
-Onion walks over to Pumpernickel, lifting his axe in a readying position.
-Onion tries to land a blow, but Pumpernickel rolls over in the nick of time.
-He attempts this two more times, faster each time.
-Onion lifts the axe if a readying position again, but this time he applies too much force and it is hurled backwards.
-Onion turns around, to try and retrieve his weapon but is stops.
-He looks down
-Pumpernickel is attached to his leg, barking playfully.
-Onion tries to shake him off. No use. Conveniently, he moves ever closer to the stair case.
-Onion lifts up one of his legs and pushes it into Pumpernickel's face.
-Pump's face absorbs the foot almost entirely. Squeaky toy sound.
-Onion breaks free and stabilizes himself, only to have Pumpernickel push him over the edge.
-Onion tumbles down the wooden stairs, breaking bones and other horrible things
-With Pumpernickel chasing after him.
-By the time Onion has reached the bottom, he's broken his neck.
-Pumpernickel jumps on Onion's stomach, panting and drooling.
-Maybe run off screen to grab a ball
-Onion is convoulsing and Pumpernickel interprets that as an opportunity to be petted.
-Family wakes up.

CONCEPT

Pumpernickel is a comedy about a serial killer that breaks into a home and is confronted by a dog that only wants to play. Whacky hijinks ensue as it becomes apparent the dog cannot be beaten. The film shares some similarities to the pilot of Brad Bird's Family Dog.

THEME

There is no moral, it's just a gag film.

CHARACTERS

Pumpernickel
– A chubby welsh corgi that isn't well known for his intelligence. Still, although not very smart, Pumpernickel always means well and loves to play with others. He also has some bizarre biological make up going on, for it seems that he is completely un-phased by any sort of injury.

Onion the Axe Murderer
– A man that takes his occupation quite seriously, Onion is man who loves his work. Onion isn't much of a talker, and he gets stressed when things don't go according to plan.

SYNOPSIS

Late at night, Pumpernickel is eating from his bowl until he hears a strange noise coming from upstairs. He scampers up the stairs and sees Onion breaking into his home through the window. Onion, busy with getting the home doesn't see Pumpernickel until he hears panting. As he turns, it becomes evident that Pumpernickel only wants to play, doing such things as wanting his stomach rubbed or picked up. Onion tries to shake him off by kicking him or even chopping him up with his axe, but none of them do anything. Eventually, Onion is inched to the stairs, where he ultimately falls and breaks his neck. Pumpernickel's family wakes from all the commotion.

Getting Started

Here are a lot of concepts sketches for the hero of my film, Pumpernickel!
